Refund policy

No, it is generally not okay to omit a return policy if you are running a business, as it can expose you to severe legal risks and hurt your sales.
While laws vary by location, consumer protection regulations in many major markets strictly require you to disclose your return rules before a customer buys.

⚖️ The Legal Risks
  • European Union & United Kingdom: You are legally required to accept returns. Under the EU Directive 2011/83/EU and the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations, online shoppers have an automatic 14-day "cooling off" period to return items for any reason. If you do not explicitly post this policy, that 14-day return window can legally extend to up to a full year.

  • United States: There is no federal law requiring returns for change-of-mind. However, many US states (like California, New York, and Florida) legally require you to clearly post a "No Returns" policy if you do not offer refunds. If you fail to post a policy, state laws automatically force you to accept full returns for up to 30 days.

  • Faulty Goods: Globally, you cannot opt-out of accepting returns for broken, defective, or misrepresented items. Saying "No Returns" on your site does not override a customer's legal right to a refund for a faulty product.

📉 The Business Risks
  • Lost Sales: Most shoppers actively look for a return policy before checkout. A missing policy signals a lack of trust, causing customers to abandon their carts.
    Montonio
  • Payment Disputes: If a customer wants a return and you refuse or don't have a clear policy, they will file a chargeback through their bank. Banks almost always favor the consumer if the store lacks a clear, published policy.
    The Complaining Cow
  • Ad Account Bans: Platforms like Google Shopping, Facebook Ads, and TikTok Shop will reject your online store ads or ban your merchant account entirely if they cannot find a valid return policy link on your website.

📝 What to Do Next
If you do not want to accept returns, you must explicitly state that on your website (e.g., "All sales are final. No returns or exchanges accepted"). If you want to accept them, create a basic 30-day return policy outlining who pays for shipping and how refunds are issued.

On the Gelato print-on-demand platform, you cannot set a custom return address on the shipping labels.
Because Gelato operates a global network of decentralized local print facilities, packages always default to the address of the specific local fulfillment partner that printed and shipped the order.

If a package is undeliverable or returned to sender, it goes back to that local facility, but Gelato will not hold, store, or reship returned orders for you. Returned items are safely destroyed at their facility.

To handle this limitation on your online store, set up your return handling using the steps below.

1. State "No Change-of-Mind Returns" in Your Policy
Since you cannot physically route returns back to a central Gelato hub, your easiest option is to explicitly state that all sales are final.
  • Drafting your policy: Use a statement like: "Because our products are custom-made and printed on demand specifically for you, we cannot accept returns or exchanges for change of mind. All sales are final."

  • Why this works legally: In regions like the US, stating this clearly before checkout fully protects you against forced buyer-remorse refunds.

2. Instruct Customers to Contact You (Not Return the Box)
If a customer has a legitimate quality issue (e.g., damaged item, blurry print, or incorrect size sent), you should instruct them to contact your support email directly with photos instead of mailing the package anywhere.

  • How to solve it: If the error is verified as a production mistake, you can log into your Gelato Dashboard, report the issue on the specific order, and Gelato will print and ship a complimentary replacement to the customer for free.

3. Use Your Own Address (Optional)
If your local consumer laws require you to offer a physical return location (such as the UK/EU distance selling regulations), or if you want to inspect items yourself, you must instruct customers to mail items to your personal address or a paid P.O. Box/Virtual Mailbox.
  • Warning: Do not put your personal address on the Gelato site thinking it will print on the shipping label. You must physically write your return address into your store's published Refund Policy page so customers know where to mail it manually.

4. Ensure Your Company Profile is Updated
To ensure your brand name appears properly on the shipping label, update your business details in your Gelato dashboard:
  1. Log into your Gelato Dashboard.
  2. Go to Settings > Company Profile.
  3. Fill out your official Company Name and Support Contact Information.
